Silk painting master's 110th birthday commemorated

The Vietnam Fine Arts Association held a ceremony in Hanoi on July 18 to mark the 110th birthday of the Vietnamese silk painting artist Nguyen Phan Chanh (July 21, 1892).

During the ceremony, painter Tran Khanh Chuong, who is secretary general of the Vietnam Fine Arts Association affirmed the great contributions made by artist Nguyen Phan Chanh to the Vietnam's fine arts. Born in 1892 in Thach Ha village, Ha Tinh province, Nguyen Phan Chanh was one of the first Vietnamese students at the Indochina Fine Arts College in 1925. He worked as a lecturer at the Vietnam Fine Arts College and created many valuable works about President Ho Chi Minh, the national revolution and resistance wars. He particularly succeeded in silk paintings on rural life with women and children.

Painter Nguyen Phan Chanh.
He held many important positions such as member of the Vietnam Fine Arts Association's Executive Board in 1957 and member of the National Literature and Arts Association in 1960. Passing away on November 22, 1984, he left behind about 110 silk paintings and 52 sketches. He had held four individual exhibitions and participated in many domestic and international painting exhibitions. Artist Nguyen Phan Chanh was awarded several medals and Ho Chi Minh Award in 1997 for his outstanding silk paintings, including 'Playing a Game of Square' (Choi O An Quan), 'Washing Vegetables in the Pond' (Rua Rau Cau Ao), 'Feeding a Bird' (Em Cho Chim An), 'A Girl Haberdasher' (Co Gai Hang Xen), 'A Bowl of Water for Refreshment' (Bat Nuoc Giai Lao), 'After Hours of Working on Duty for War' (Sau Gio Truc Chien) and 'Clothes' (Tam Ao).
