Truong Chis love story hits centre stage (October 02, 2004)

HA NOI Vietnamese artists will stage a ballet based on the ancient Vietnamese love story, Truong Chi, to greet the Fifth Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM 5) in Ha Noi on Sunday night.

It is a story of how the masked Truong Chi captivates Princess M Nuong with his bamboo flute, causing her to refuse three men proposing marriage to her.

She falls in love with Truong Chis flute, and gradually, Truong Chi himself. However, she is shocked when Truong Chi finally takes off his mask and she sees his ugly face.

The harrowing sight and the realisation that she can never love him sends her into a whirlwind of despair, until she eventually dies, leaving Truong Chi with nothing but sorrow.

The idea of creating a ballet based on this story was a result of an off-hand conversation between musician Nguyen Thien Dao and director of the Viet Nam National Opera and Ballet Theatre (VNOB) Nguyen Cong Nhac.

Dao completed the score to the ballet in 2003, and nearly one year later the Truong Chi ballet debuted, earning accolades from Ha Noi audiences.

The ballet has five movements including Nuoc Mat M Nuong (M Nuongs tears); Tuong tu (Lovesick); Cau Hon (The Engagement); Moi Tinh Truong Chi, M Nuong (The Truong Chi-M Nuong Love Story) and Chia tay (Separation).

"The ballet Truong Chi is the harmonious combination between traditional and contemporary music," said Nhac.

The ballet gathers 35 dancers and 60 artists, including ballerina Tuyet Dung, who will play M Nuong and Anh Duc, who will play Truong Chi.

The show will open at 8pm at the Ha Noi Opera House. Tickets range from VND120,000-180,000 and are available at the opera house and the ADS Company, located at Number 11, Lane 59, Nui Truc Street. VNS
