Ancient architecture preservation project receives UNESCO award (October 14, 2004)

A project dedicated to preserving Viet Nam’s traditional villages was given the Award of Merit by the Asia-Pacific Heritage Award Council of the United Nations’ Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).

UNESCO’s Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation recognised the efforts and contributions of Viet Nam’s Ministry of Culture and Information in guiding the preservation of ancient architecture in six selected villages and towns.

The ministry helped preserve cultural sites in Dinh Bang in the northern Bac Ninh Province, Hoi An in the central Quang Nam Province, Bien Hoa in the southern Dong Nai Province, Xuan Hong in the northern Nam Dinh Province, Vinh Tien in the central Thanh Hoa Province, and Dong Hoa Hiep in the southern Tien Giang Province.

Thailand’s Phra Racha Wang Derm, also known as Thonburi Palace, was also among the winners of the Award of Merit for UNESCO’s Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards for Culture Heritage Conservation in 2004.

The annual Heritage Awards programme is part of the Office of the UNESCO Regional Advisor for Culture in Asia and the Pacific’s effort to promote conservation of the region’s architectural heritage. Ancient and historic buildings are often threatened by unchecked development, neglect or inappropriate use. — VNS
