Ancient Hanoi to be recalled amidst old quarter (December 31, 2004)

Ma May street in early 20th century.
To welcome the New Year, for the first time, life and cultural tradition of ancient Hanoians will be re-staged amidst Hanoi old quarter through an exhibition named ‘Thang Long (the ancient name of the capital city) – Hanoi Cultural Activities’.

The exhibition is expected to open in the first month of the New Year on Ma May old street (covering Hang Buom to Hang Bac streets) with a focus on the heritage house at No 87 Ma May street.

Simple but profound traditional activities of Hanoians will be re-staged at the exhibition so that visitors and foreigners can have a chance to understand more about the capital city.

Home appliances and daily activities of Hanoians in the early days of the 20th century will be introduced at No 87 Ma May street.

Visitors then will have a chance to witness a traditional living room with ancient furniture, ancestral altar and also kitchen with utensils which are now rarely seen in modern dining room.

Also at the heritage house, objects reflecting Thang Long – Hanoi cultural activities and handicrafts will be on show.

A display of ornamental plants, flowers and a bonsai competition will take place on Ma May street, expressing the old people’s taste in enjoying the beauty.

Models in costumes of ancient Hanoians as well as of bride and gloom in the past and present will also be part of the activities in Ma May street.

Artisans will perform their skill in making paintings in papyrus paper, paper fans and children’s toy.

Art performances will be held with the participation of various artisans and artists.

The exhibition, which will be organised by the Hanoi Department of Culture and Information, aims to welcome the New Year, look toward the 1,000th anniversary of Thang Long – Hanoi and promote tourism activities in Hanoi old quarter.
