Expanding cultural exchange between Vietnam and abroad (Januray 17, 2005)

"Meeting Hanoi" an art progamme which had the participation of artists of Vietnam, the US and France.
Together with international integration and country’s development, cultural exchange between Vietnam and other countries has been strengthened and become a dispensable activity in popularising Vietnam to the world.

According to the statistic of the Ministry of Culture and Information (MCI), in 2004, 106 delegations of around 2,000 people went abroad for performances and 217 foreign art groups came to Vietnam under various cultural exchange channels. Deputy Minister of Culture and Information Tran Chien Thang said “The number of delegations touring abroad or visiting the country reflects only part of the activity. International cultural exchange has been much improved in quality of operation. Many events impressed domestic as well as international people.”

Last year, Vietnam took an active part in many prestigious international cultural events such as the Global Culture Forum in Spain. In particular, Vietnam joined the International Folk Art Festival in the US in 2004 for the first time.

The MCI has successfully implemented many cultural projects with organisations such as SIDA, Ford Foundation, ASEAN-COCI, the South East Asia Pacific Audio Visual Archive Association and has signed a great number of cultural agreements with foreign bodies. International art activities have been improved through the organisation of ASEAN Culture Week and art programmes welcoming the ASEM 5 and the Summit of Francophone countries in Africa.

Over the last year, Vietnam joined various international film festivals, book fairs, a conference on publishing, antique and fine arts exhibitions and many other seminars on culture and civilisation.

Besides hosting the International Circus Festival in Vietnam, many domestic art groups have joined international festivals and won high prizes, including the Gold Cup won at the Traditional Art Festival in China.

The MCI has received and allowed foreign film producers to come and make films about Vietnam, helping popularise the country abroad.

Apart from cultural exchanges organised by the MCI, art activities held abroad by sectors and offices such as the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism, Vietnam Airlines and the Ministry of Trade have left an excellent impression on international friends.

The international cultural activities over the past year has been expanded, not only contributing to introducing more about Vietnam to international friends but also, according to Deputy Minister of Culture and Information, being a chance “for domestic artists and researchers to learn more about the world culture as well as enrich the Vietnamese culture.
