Vietnamese artists selected as Andersen Goodwill Ambassadors (February 27, 2005)

Many Vietnamese people have read tales by the talented Danish writer Hans Christin Andersen such as the Princess and the Peanut, the Match Seller, The Emperor’s New Clothes and the Ugly Duckling.

Pop singer Thanh Lam said she first liked Andersen’s tales when she was eight years old. She liked the stories so much that she read them every night and learnt them by heart.

For People’s Artist Le Khanh, Andersen’s tales set a mark in her mind. She said she liked the Fairy Tales most and still wonders today whether fairies really exist. She often reads her children the tales because Andersen’s humorous and imaginative stories are suitable for children’s innocent souls, she said.

Khanh said the stories were closely linked to developments in her life and grew into unforgettable memories. She recalled the time when she studied at the Tuoi Tre (Youth) Drama Theatre, she selected the story "The Match Seller" to develop a drama for her graduation exam and gained a top mark. She also selected Andersen’s tales to tell in a narration subject.

Like People’s Artist Le Khanh and pop singer Thanh Lam, the name Andersen has become popular among generations of Vietnamese people. Therefore, the two young artists were surprised and delighted to hear the news that they were selected to be Andersen Goodwill Ambassadors to mark his 200th birth anniversary this year.

The two artists will participate in series of activities to mark this event and both expect to bring Andersen’s spirit to Vietnamese audiences. To begin these activities, the two ambassadors will participate in a special art programme to be held at the Opera House in Hanoi on April 2, which coincides the writer’s birthday.

Danish people call their nation the country of Andersen, demonstrating how proud they are of their writer. To mark his birthday this year, Denmark’s Anderson Organisation will organise various activities throughout the world, from art performances to exhibitions about the writer.

In Vietnam, the Vietnam-Denmark Cultural Exchange Fund will organise talk shows and display the talented writer’s immortal works and objects. To mark the occasion, the Vietnam Writers’ Association Publisher has just published a book featuring 52 Andersen tales, translated by Tran Minh Tam.
