Huynh snaps gold in photo finish

HA NOI — Four photographers from Viet Nam, Malaysia, Ukraine and Belgium have snapped up the gold medals at an international photographic competition held recently in Viet Nam.

Vietnamese photographer Pham Huynh, Malaysian Soo Wee Ming, Belgian Van Brusselen Jozet and Ukrainian Andrey Zolochevsky defeated over 1,024 contestants from 36 countries to win the honour, the competition’s organisers announced on Monday.

The Vietnamese and Malaysian contestants won the awards in the colour photography category, while their fellows from Ukraine and Belgium topped the black and white domain.

The winning photograph from Malaysia, entitled Snatch, features a marvellous image of a bird flying out of the water.

Meanwhile, Huynh presents an image familiar to his compatriots – farmers at work on mountainous areas in Sunshine in the Highlands.

The black and white photographs, Julia by Zolochevsky and Prefetex Brand by Jozet, are both very classical compositions.

Eight silver medals and 12 bronzes were also handed out at the competition.

Organisers say all of the entries were high-quality, and they covered a range of themes and issues.

Playing to the home crowd, Viet Nam had over 800 contestants competing in the event. But they were no match for Huynh, who hails from the Tay Nguyen (Central Highlands) province of Dac Lac.

"I am proud of the fact that Vietnamese photographers can stand on a par with their overseas colleagues in photographic competitions," says Le Phuc, chairman of the Viet Nam Association of Photographic Artists (VAPA) and juror of the competition.

However, jurors agree that photo labs need to work more closely with Vietnamese photographers to improve the quality of their final products.

The competition was launched earlier this year, and was sponsored by VAPA, the International Federation of Photographic Artists (FIAP) and Fujifilm. An exhibition of the winners will be held in Ha Noi from August 30.
