City photography show celebrates women (March 09, 2005)

Good Appetite-Lao Cai by Doan Duc Minh.
A photo exhibition opened in Ho Chi Minh City last weekend to raise funds for the city's poor women in anticipation of International Women's Day, March 8.

On display is a collection of 20 photographs reflecting the beauty of Vietnamese women, taken by well-known photographer Doan Duc Minh.

The exhibition illustrates the sacrifices, joys and hopes of Vietnamese women. The photographs highlight the beauty of women in all aspects of life, at home as well as at work: taking care of their children, -doing laundry, selling fish and working in the fields.

Aside from portraying Vietnamese women from around the country, the photos depict the experiences, efforts and visions of needy women, including women or their children disabled by Agent Orange. Some women represented in the exhibition struggled with disabilities or misfortune but learned vocational skills and the ability to make a living on their own.

Other subjects have happy smiles and an optimistic view about life. They smile about their work in the market or in the field, having food for their children, or celebrate the South Liberation Day.

Minh has travelled around the country and captured images of women in all walks of life, not only women in the urban areas of Ho Chi Minh City and Hue, but also minority women from northern areas, as in Good Appetite-Lao Cai-Bac Ha or An Old Sa Pa Woman.

Over his 20-year career, Minh has earned top awards at local and international photo contests. His work has appeared in several group exhibitions in the US, UK, Thailand, Japan and Austria. He's also had solo shows at home including Viet Nam and Its People in 1997 and Saigon - Black and White in 2000.

The exhibition, organised by the McCann Erickson Company, runs until March 11 at the company's office, 429 Vo Van Tan Street in Ho Chi Minh City's District 3. Proceeds from the show will go towards housing for poor women. (VNS)
