Vietnam Association of Photographic Artists holds congress (March 22, 2005)

More than 50 VAPA members were awarded the Artist FIAP title.
The Vietnam Association of Photographic Artists (VAPA) convened its sixth congress at the Ba Dinh Hall in Hanoi on March 14 to discuss orientations for its operations in the 2005-2010 term.

Speaking at the opening session, VAPA deputy Secretary General Chu Chi Thanh highlighted photographers' great contributions to national development by reflecting truthfully and vividly the achievements from the economic renewal and national defence.

Mr Thanh praised the VAPA for having created a level playing field for both professional and amateur photographers in the country to compete healthily and share experiences with one another. He also praised the Association's efforts to contribute to boosting cultural exchanges with other countries around the world.

Mr Thanh noted the great impact that photograghs can have on the people's cultural life, attributing it to the increasing use of pictures by an estimated 600 newspapers and magazines and by television stations at all levels nationwide daily.

In regard to the Association's international ties in the 1999-2005 period, Mr Thanh said the VAPA successfully hosted the second International Contest and Exhibition on Artistic Photos in 2002, a World Press Photos exhibition in 2004 in Hanoi, and many photos exhibitions of French, German, Argentinian and Cuban photographers in the country.

In particular, the VAPA was invited to join the jury of an international photography contest held by the Asia/Pacific Culture Centre for UNESCO in Japan. Its ties with the International Federation of Photographic Art (FIAP) have been further expanded over the time.

In the 1999-2005 term, VAPA Secretary General Le Phuc was presented with the Honorary Excellence FIAP (Hon.E.FIAP) title. More than 50 VAPA members were awarded the Artist FIAP (A.FIAP) title, other 30 members with the Excellence FIAP (E.FIAP) title and one artist with the Excellence for rendered Services to FIAP (E.S.FIAP) title.

The VAPA itself was awarded the Ho Chi Minh Order, the State's second highest distinction, on the occasion of its 50th traditional day (Mar.15).

Speaking at the opening session, Nguyen Khoa Diem, Head of the Party Central Committee's Commision for Culture and Ideology, emphasised the close links between artistic and press photos and political and ideological spheres.

He urged photographers to continue in this new period of development to reflect honestly and vividly the national renewal achievements as well as the improvement of people's living conditions.

The VAPA's two-day congress is attended by 360 photographers representing more than 700 members nationwide.
