Quang Nam festival promotes traditional culture (April 05, 2005)

A tourist - cultural festival named "Quang Nam - 2005 Heritage Road" opened at My Son Temples in the central province of Quang Nam with a spectacular art performance, rich in folklore, reviving the 600-year history of the province.

The event was attended by Nguyen Khoa Diem, a member of the Political Bureau and Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee, and Head of the Party CC’s Commission for Culture and Ideology.

The festival took place in an open area, stretching from Tam Ky, Hoi An to Duy Xuyen and Dien Ban districts, attracting a large number of local people and 50 art groups from inside and outside the country.

My Son and Hoi An - two World Cultural Heritage Sites, Ngoc Linh mountain and Thu Bon River were the four focal points of the opening night.

In his opening speech, chairman of the Quang Nam Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Xuan Phuc highlighted the significance of the festival for the province and the region, saying it will help spread the region’s traditional cultural images. It is an opportunity for the province to promote its cultural assets such as Hoi An ancient town and My Son Temples, which have been recognised by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) as the World Heritage Sites. It also provides a chance for the province to promote Quang Nam as a province on a fast-track to development.

He said Quang Nam would do its best to preserve and tap its cultural heritage to make the province an ideal destination in the interests of local socio-economic development.

His speech was followed by a spectacular art performance by some 200 amateur artists, a fashion show displaying a collection of 300 designs, the "Mother Thu Bon" procession, and traditional dances by Cham girls in traditional costumes.

The Quang Nam Heritage Road Festival, held every two years, attracts visitors both from all parts of Vietnam and the world. The event will open a series of activities in the area in response to the Nghe An Tourism Year. The festival will continue until March 27.
