Sculpture camp at Hung King Temple Festival: Stone revives legends (April 18, 2005)

A sculpture at the garden.
The international sculpture camp, under the framework of the Hung King Temple Festival, with 31 works by 23 Vietnamese sculptors and five foreign artists from four countries, has recently concluded in Viet Tri town, Phu Tho province.

Legends and symbols relating to the Hung King Age become the inspiration of sculptors. Images of historical and legendary characters such as Hung Kings, Mother Au Co, King An Duong Vuong, Saint Giong, Princesses My Nuong and My Chau are seen at the Van Lang statue garden which was inaugurated on April 17 after one month.

Some of the statues take abstract forms, reflecting the world view and philosophy of life of the then Van Lang people.

In the theme on the revolutionary war, sculptor Tran Thanh Phong from An Giang province brings to the camp his memory with his statue featuring the heroic Vietnamese mother. The image of four incense burners is the author’s commemoration to his four brothers who sacrificed their lives during the two resistance wars.

Meanwhile, foreign sculptors have contributed works bearing the ubiquitous and ageless themes such as war, peace, friendship and co-operation.

Despite the monotonous material as most of the statues are made from the same source of 200 blocks of rock taken from Yen Bai province, excepting one sculpture by Norwegian artist Lein made from black and white stone, this is the meaningful gift of sculptors to the going-to-be-built Van Lang Park.
