History Museum to showcase Oc Eo cultural artifacts (April 21, 2005)

The Vietnam Museum of History will display artifacts of the Oc Eo Culture contributed by 11 other museums from April 27.

On display will be more than 300 artifacts ranging from domestic objects, jewellery, decorations, to idols made of various materials such as wood, stone, bronze, pottery, agate, glass and gold. These objects depict the Oc Eo culture and its value in the country's history.

The archaeological term Oc Eo Culture refers to a country by the name of Funan. Funan, the earliest of the Indianised states, was founded in the first century A.D. It was located on the lower reaches of the Mekong River in the delta area. The earliest historical reference to Funan is a Chinese description of a mission that visited the country in the third century A.D. The name Funan derives from the Chinese rendition of the old Khmer word bnam (meaning mountain). What the Funanese called themselves, however, is not known.

Funan reached its zenith in the fifth century A.D.. Beginning in the early sixth century, civil wars and dynastic strife undermined Funan's stability, making it relatively easy prey to incursions by hostile neighbours. By the end of the seventh century, a northern neighbour, the kingdom of Chenla, reduced Funan to a vassal state.
