Return direction (April 27, 2005)

VietNamNet - French-Vietnamese movie director Tran Anh Hung and his wife, actress Tran Nu Yen Khe, will return to Hanoi on April 28 to support a project for young Vietnamese filmmakers.

Born in Vietnam but educated in France, Tran Anh Hung uses his dual-culture identity to enhance his filmmaking abilities.

His Vietnam films, balanced between romanticised memories from his childhood and present-day social observation, are so deeply rooted in the culture – so at ease with it – that they could never have been made by a foreigner.

But Mr Tran’s way of thinking about characters and relationships, his fetishistically precise imagery and his elliptical narrative structures are all quintessentially French.

The two strands meshed to fascinating effect in The Scent of Green Papaya (1993) and Cyclo (1995), but At the Height of Summer is a slightly less satisfying hybrid: a film in which the strain of imposed ideas begins to show.

Beautiful actress Tran Nu Yen Khe has had a great contribution to her husband’s success. Playing Mui (The Scent of Green Papaya), Thuy (Cyclo), and Lien (At the Height of Summer), she has created a young and romantic feeling for the movies.

The couple will stay in Hanoi until May 8. As usual, the Metropole becomes their home far away from home where some of the scenes of the latest movie (At the Height of Summer) were shown.
