Solo debut highlights Vietnamese painter's unique lacquer works (June 22, 2005)

Ms Hien's painting Cha Toi (My Father).
An exhibition of lacquer works by artist Nguyen Thi Hien is a treat for art lovers now on display at HCM City's Exhibition House.

This is Ms Hien's first solo exhibition in Vietnam, though her works have been seen at several group showings at home and abroad, including one exhibition in Germany in 1998 and another in the US in 2000.

Ms Hien, 59, the owner of Hien Minh Gallery in the city, began working with lacquer many decades ago and most of her works over the years have featured portraits.

Portraits of her relatives and friends - as well as well-known writers and musicians - dominate the exhibition room.

Images of Vietnamese flowers, children and women clad in traditional clothing are romantically portrayed in many of her works including Still Life, Mother and Child and White Lotus.

In 1956, when she was only 10 years old, one of her paintings was selected for a Hungarian fine art exhibition featuring child artists, the first of many prizes she was to win.

Over the next four years, she carried off four silver medals at an annual international fine arts exhibition in India. And she won a bronze medal at another in Poland in 1961.

In Vietnam, the painter went on to graduate from the Hanoi Fine Arts College and won the highest prize in several painting contests from 1962 to 1972.

Many of Ms Hien's works are now kept at the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum and in private collections at home and abroad.

The exhibition of Ms Hien's works at the city's Exhibition House, 92 Le Thanh Ton Street, District 1, will run until June 25. Opening from 9am to 8pm.
