Web arts (July 17, 2005)

More and more Vietnamese artists are using web pages to introduce their works, hoping to set up closer relations with art lovers.

"These websites may curtail the distance between artists and the public," says Trinh Cung, a well-know painter and art critic. "But as far as I know, there is no website that excels in professionalism. These artists mainly want to advertise themselves."

According to another critic, Nguyen Hung, "Everyone knows that there’s a distance between real paintings and the works displayed on the web. Computers are used to ‘upgrade’ them, making it difficult to assess their real value."

Painter Nhu Huy, co-producer of , a website that offers viewers new experiences in art, disagrees. "We must accept the good as well as the bad of computers. When people get used to the techniques, they’ll be able to appraise what is real art."

Art lovers complain that there’s tons of information on Vietnamese painters like Le Ba Dang, Diem Phung Thi, but almost nothing on contemporary painters like Nguyen Gia Tri, Bui Xuan Phai, Nguyen Tu Nghiem, artists who laid the foundation for modern Vietnamese paintings.

"Several paintings of mine have been uploaded onto the Net in the wrong size, and thus lose their effects. I want to do it myself," says Hung, when asked why he set up his own website.
