International Photo Contest VN05 (August 19, 2005)

The International Photo Contest VN05, which attracted 7,228 works of 1,416 photographers from 45 countries, was a great success. It was a good chance for photographers to exchange their experiences and access to new technique.

Forty-one photographs won prizes of Vietnam Association of Photographic Artists (VAPA) and the International Federation of Photographic Artists (FIAP), of which 21 were of Vietnamese photographers.

The work “Cooking fire” (colour) by Huynh Minh Tri from Ho Chi Minh City was awarded the special prize-Cup VAPA-NIKON. The photo depicts the warm atmosphere in a highland family by the cooking fire. Through the photo, viewers can perceive the close attachment among family members. The photo has a close composition and high artistic value.

Two FIAP’s gold medals were given to the works “Anxiety” (colour) by Hoang Trung Thuy and “Having breakfast” (black and white) by Huynh Van Danh. The photos “Under a rain” by Mikhai Bondar (Ukraine) and “Don’t disturb” by Shyamal Das (India) captured gold medals of VAPA.

One of the criteria of the contest is the humanity of works. All the winning works at the contest are diverse in themes and imbued with personality. In term of technique, there was not much difference between works of Vietnamese and foreign photographers. While foreign photographers hold the upper hand in creativeness, ideas and compositions, the Vietnamese photographers have the advantage of reflecting the truth and the characteristics of objects but the romance and lyricism are rarely seen in their works.

The contest was not only a chance for photographers to exchange their experiences but also for those in the Vietnamese photographic circle to examine the quality of Vietnam’s photography.
