Trekking tours to Ho Village draw discovery lovers (September 22, 2005)

On a beautiful day, distant Ho Village can be seen from a good vantage point in Sapa, but a world quite different from the popular resort awaits those intrepid enough to make the trek.

It takes about seven hours to walk to Ho Village from Sapa. Tourists must set out in the early morning. The village, whose centre is Ban Den Hamlet, is at the confluence of Muong Hoa and La Ve springs, and has become an attractive destination.

Muong Hoa Spring brings water to tens of villages, but La Ve Spring flows exclusively to the Ho Village from the high mountain, more pristine, clear and private.

One reward for making the trip is to swim in the cool water flowing out of the rock mountain in the middle of the vast green forests. Waterfalls, such as Ca Nhay (Fish Jumping) and Seo Trung Ho, abound as well. One, Seo Trung Ho, is over 100m high and looks like a white silk strip running halfway down the mountain.

Due to its steep mountain paths, Ho Village is not appropriate for those without ambitions of discovery and strong legs. Ho villagers mainly belong to the Tay ethnic minority group, whose lifestyle is similar to the Kinh (Viet) people, the main difference being that the Tay live in stilted houses.

Homestay tours are now becoming popular in Ho Village. About 30 large stilt houses in Ban Den Hamlet serve tourists at US$1 per day. Guests may enjoy ethnic speciality dishes, fire dances and local libations made from sticky rice or maize.

Morning serenades by rare mountain birds are at no extra charge.
