Mekong’s portraits through Lam Duc Hien’s lens (November 23, 2006)

Vietnamese French photographer Lam Duc Hien now returns to Hanoi for another exhibition named ‘Mekong’s Portraits after the photo exhibition ‘Iraqi’ in September, 2004 which gained much success in Vietnam.

The exhibition, which will open on December 1 at the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology, introduces a series of large size pictures taken during Hien’s journey along Mekong region in six years, from 1999 to 2004.

In 1999, Lam Duc Hien returned to Mekong which is closely associated with his childhood to complete a diary of pictures, recalling history and uncovering private stories. Along the river, the photographer returned to the origin with memory of his childhood where he lived until the year of six before coming to live in France. The six year journey helped Hien create a dozen of typical double works: portraits put in peaceful landscape of the Mekong river region.

Hien’s parents are Vietnamese. In the wartime, his parents came to Laos and gave birth to him. He holds a French nationality and is now living in Paris. Hien graduated from the Lyon Fine Arts University and later became a photographer after various humanitarian activities. He has taken photos in hot spots of the world such as Rwanda, Chechnya, Bosnia and Iraq.

He won the first prize in annual prestigious World Press Photo with portraits of Iraqi in 2001.

In addition, he has published a number of books such as ‘Portraits’, ‘A Childhood and Childhoods’, ‘Journey’s Diary’ and some others.

Earlier, ‘Mekong’s Portraits’ also displayed at the Festival Hue in 2006 and IDECAF Institute for Culture Exchange with France from October 17 – November 11.

‘Mekong’s Portraits’ in Hanoi runs until January 7, 2007.

On the occassion, a documentary film named ‘Mekong River and Photographer’ co-directed by artist Lam Duc Hien will be on show at L’ Espace French Cultural Centre at 24 Trang Tien street, Hanoi.
