Vietnamese designer lights up Paris

Vietnamese fashions were expected to debark in Paris at the weekend, showing that Parisians in Vietnamese fashion can go beyond Catherine Deneuve amidst the palms in a wide-rimmed Chanel hat.

HCM City fashion designer Minh Hanh has been invited to showcase her designs at the Nuit Blanche (White Night) festival in Paris. In French, Nuit Blanche means up all night, which is exactly what this festival will be: an all-night art, music, theatre and fashion showcase.

Hanh, the Manager of HCM City’s Fashion and Design Institute (Fadin), is the only Vietnamese designer to be invited by the officials of the France–Viet Nam Cultural Co-operation and Development Programme.

She will take with her 200 designs from her latest collection, "Eyes of the Moon," in which she has combined the traditional ao dai with western styles.

"Hanh’s "Eyes of the Moon" designs which were shown at this year’s Hue Festival impressed French officials so much that they decided to invite her to showcase her designs at Nuit Blanche which is being held for the first time in Paris," said Christian Merer, the Cultural Attache at the French Consulate-General in HCM City.

Other participants in Nuit Blanche include 25 performance groups, featuring dance, ballet, opera and theatre, from France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany and other European countries.

The festival was scheduled to take place from 8pm October 5 until 8am October 6 at more than twenty well-known Paris locations including the Eiffel Tower, the Hotel de Ville and the Palais Royal.

Hanh’s collection was said to be displayed at the festival’s only fashion show to be held at the Palais Royal to a soundtrack of techno music composed by French musician Laurent Garnier.

After the Nuit Blanche festival, Hanh’s collection will represent Viet Nam at the Oriental Festival to be held in Nantes, France on October 10-12. The Oriental Festival, featuring the art and culture of Asian countries, will include performances by 10 artistic troupes from Asian countries including China, Japan and the Republic of Korea.

According to Christian Merer, France will begin official co-operation with Viet Nam in the fashion industry following Hanh’s shows.

Soon, two young stage managers and two fashion designers will be selected to study in France from two to three years. "The stage managers will receive training in fashion show production," said Merer.

"Young designers and stage managers fluent in French will be eligible for the scholarships," he added.

Next year, the French Government will begin a three-year project in Viet Nam, worth US$2.9 million, to help the country develop its network of museums and libraries.
