Russia gets a taste of Vietnamese arts

HA NOI — A 100-member Vietnamese troupe will take a feast of cultural activities to Russia next week as part of the Viet Nam’s Cultural Days programme.

The week-long event will take place in Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Novgorod and Vladimir between November 4 and 12.

The programme has been organised under an agreement between the two Governments, which saw Russian Cultural Days held in Viet Nam last year.

The Vietnamese troupe will put on music performances, a photo exhibition and film screenings.

Director of the programme People’s Artist Nguyen Trung Kien, who studied singing in the former Soviet Union, said the performances would be lively and impressive.

"I can’t say that all the performances are distinguished but I can affirm that this is the first time they have been performed in Russia," Kien said.

Hue Royal Court music, which has been submitted to UNESCO for World Heritage recognition, will kick off the festival on Monday night at the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall in Moscow.

Artists from the central Tuong theatre will perform an extract from the classical opera Ho Nguyet Co Turns Fox.

The show will also include cheo singing, folk songs, dances and performance of traditional instruments from Viet Nam’s various ethnic minorities.

As the maintenance of friendship is central to the programme’s objectives, the Vietnamese artists will also perform many famous Russian folk songs.

Artists from Ha Noi Conservatory will perform chamber music created by Glinka, Borodin, Rimsky and Tchaikovsky.

Russians will also get a glimpse of the country and people of contemporary Viet Nam through a photo exhibition.

More than 230 photos which have won prizes at photo competitions at home and abroad will be displayed at the exhibition.
