Musician pushes guitar’s classical virtues

HA NOI — Guitarist Nguyen Quang Vinh was expected to let his fingers do the talking during his concert on Sunday night in the capital city. His message: the guitar needs more respect in his homeland.

"The guitar has been recognised around the world as a classic musical instrument but it is only regarded as an instrument for pop and rock shows in Viet Nam," said the 32-year-old guitarist, also a guitar lecturer at the Ha Noi National Conservatory.

"With this concert, I want to do something to bring up the position of guitar in the Viet Nam’s musical circle. I know it’s a difficult task but I must fulfil it," he added.

The soloist was said to perform popular classical pieces written for the six – stringed musical instrument by Spanish, Cuban, Brazilian and Mexican composers between the late 19th century and early 20th century.

"All the classical musical pieces I will perform on Sunday night have been recognised as world heritage, and I see no national boundary for music compositions," Vinh told Viet Nam News when asked why he does not perform musical works by Vietnamese composers.

They were supposed to include Prelude by Heitor Vila Lobos, Federico Moreno Torroba’s Suite Castellana, Francisco Tarrerga’s Recuerdos de la Alhambra, Leo Brouwer’s Elogio de la Danza, Manuel Maria Ponce’s Ballet, Isaac Albeniz’s Torre Bermeja and Malaguena by Le Couna.

Born into a family of music, Nguyen Quang Vinh had his first guitar lesson at the age of six with his father, guitar teacher Hai Thoai. He then studied at the Guitar Faculty at Ha Noi National Conservatory and graduated in 1994. Vinh has performed classical compositions nation-wide.

The one- night concert is organised by the Centre for Support of Talent Development. Doors were scheduled to open at 8pm on Sunday night at the Ha Noi Opera House. — VNS
