Art exhibition toasts Ha Noi’s downing of fearsome B52s (Dec13, 2002)

HA NOI — Thirty years after beating the most ferocious air strikes of the American War, an exhibit devoted to what the Vietnamese call with reverence "Dien Bien Phu Of The Air" recently opened in the capital’s army museum.

Dien Bien Phu Of The Air runs through January 10 next year, featuring 107 different art works including paintings, block prints, and sculptures, by 94 artists.

The glory days of the war rivet viewers, recalling the strength that Vietnamese people displayed during the air war that pitted national fighters against a daunting force of almost 200 B52 strategic bombers and 1,000 tactical aircraft.

Ha Noi, Hai Phong and other areas in northern Viet Nam were the major targets and where the victory won there has hit home the hardest.

Among the most striking works are Strong Impetus of Thang Long – Ha Noi and B52 Victory, a bronze sculpture by Ngo Chinh, Aircraft Falls in Ha Noi Street, a painting by Nguyen Bang Lam, Bui Lan Phuong’s gouache painting Kham Thien on December 26 1972 Night and Mai San’s oil painting Ready to Fight. They all portray Vietnamese people’s brave spirit during the fierce 12 days and nights.

The exhibition organisers – Viet Nam Fine Arts Association and the Viet Nam People’s Army General Political Department and Anti-aircraft and Airforce Command – will select and give awards to what they deem the best art work.

Pointing at the resurgence of interest in the battle, two books have also been recently published on the same topic: Reminiscence of Dien Bien Phu of the Air by various authors and Dien Bien Phu of the Air – Victory of Viet Nam’s Determination and Brain by Luu Trong Lan. — VNS
