After 53 years, the Hanoi University of Industrial Design, one of the largest schools in VietNam, is slowly gaining worldwide recognition for a comprehensive design curriculum that embraces both industry and art.
With an enrollment of over 3,000 students, HaNoi University of Industrial Design has 165 teachers, six faculties, two training centres, seven specialty-training departments and a well-equipped research department.
The school offers a wide variety of art subjects such as pottery, lacquer, jewelry making, fashion design, graphic design, weaving and stained glass, as well as industrial design.
Each year the school organizes several exhibitions to show student’s achievements. Recent shows were held at the Australian embassy and the Goethe Institute in HaNoi. The University also has an on-going dialogue and exchange with the Moscow Industrial Design University, the Hall-Burg Giebichenstein Germany Industrial Design University, the Quangxi Aesthetic Academy in China, Czech Industrial Design Institute and the Japan Association of Designers.
“We are now looking into a co-operative program in France for fashion design", said Mr. Le Huyen, HaNoi University of Industrial Design principal.
The calibre of technical education and the opportunity for overseas studies has created a huge demand for enrollment by Vietnam’s brightest design students, but Le Huyen explains that “at present the school can only accept about 200 students a year.”
“We teach an artistic trade and give our students the opportunity to succeed," said Le Huyen.” “Our graduates not only get well paying jobs, but many go on to form successful businesses.”
The University has published several books celebrating student and teacher achievements in many artistic and crafts fields. The books are available from the school by special order.
