A soft golden silk evening dress featuring white lotus designs, has won Vietnamese beauty contestant Chu Thi Van Anh the title Best Evening Dress at the Miss Tourism Intercontinental, held recently in Kuching, Malaysia.

Competing against 32 entrants from all over the world, the 21-year-old professional, selected by French-owned Elite Model Management Viet Nam to represent her home country also made the competition’s top 10.

"The simplicity of Van Anh’s evening dress helped her win over other mostly glittery gowns pinned with jewellery," said Bui Thuy Hanh, from Elite Management and Van Anh’s country manager for the contest.

To make the competition’s top 10 Van Anh had to pass a Q&A round where she was asked what she thought of the current state of international tourism, threatened with war, terrorism and SARS.

"These problems do not belong to any one nation," Van Anh said. "Authorities from every country need to work together to find peaceful solutions."

As a forum to promote national tourism, Van Anh noted her favourite destinations were Ha Noi and Ha Long Bay.

During the talent show, Van Anh sang the popular Vietnamese folk song Trong Com and performed a modern dance piece.

It was the first time Van Anh, who is studying at the Ha Noi College of Tourism, had entered a beauty competition.

"Apart from the prize, which thrilled me on stage, the bit I liked best was the friendliness of host countries and competitors," Van Anh said. "It was not a competition, but a meeting of friends. We all cried when it came time to say goodbye."

Twenty-year-old Charlene Gerber from South Africa was crowned Miss Tourism Intercontinental followed by Alina Seleznyova, 22, from the Ukraine and Australian Jessica Catherine Milton, 21, who came third.

The Malaysian contestant won the Miss Goodwill award while her Chinese competitor won Miss Charm. The Brazilian entrant stole the talent show and the Thai candidate’s subtle traditional dress was best honoured. — VNS
