Feted local painter takes out top ASEAN art award

Nguyen Quoc Huy
VNS- Vietnamese artist Nguyen Quoc Huy has been awarded the Juror's Choice Award at this year's ASEAN Arts Awards.

Huy, who was also among the five winners of the Philip Morris Viet Nam Fine Arts Award last November, was presented with the honour for his lacquer painting Liberation Road at a ceremony in Bali, Indonesia last week.

He shared the US$ 25,000 prize with four other artists hailing from Thailand, the Philippines, Myanmar and Malaysia.

"It is beyond my wildest expectations to be awarded this prize." "And my happiness is multiplied by the fact that I was given the chance to represent Viet Nam's fine arts community at the ceremony," Huy said.

His lacquer work depicts a road named "liberation" where all kinds of pressures and stresses affect daily life. "Through the road, I sought to explore deeper and further the notion of 'life', while through the word 'liberation' I wanted to look at different ways of thinking," the 31-year-old artist explained. The Jurors awarded the Grand Prize to Francis Ng Tech Yong, a 26 years old artist from Singapore for his work Construction No.1, a colour photographic print.

The artist used photography to capture the processes of construction, reconstruction and deconstruction as well as the concept of space in transition. "My intention is to raise awareness of the different states of space in order to accurately represent a moment in time," Yong said at the award ceremony.

The other recipients of the Juror's Choice Awards, were Jaruwat Boonwaedlom from Thailand, for his oil painting New Vision on Culture; Benjamin Dayrit Elayda III from the Philippines, for the mixed media presentation Valorised and Commodified Curio; Aung Myint from Myanmar, for Homage to the Mother, an acrylic work on shan paper and canvas; and Mohammad Suhaimi bin Tohid from Malaysia, for Journey, another mixed media composition.

Established in 1994 in Singapore, the ASEAN Art Awards are supported by 33 national art institutions from the region.
