HA NOI — The Asia Composers League has announced that Ha Noi will host the 2005 Asia Contemporary Music Festival.
This will be the first festival of its kind ever held in Viet Nam. However, the Viet Nam Composers Association’s participation dates back to the 2001 festival when composer Do Hong Quan’s chamber concert symphony, composer Nguyen Xinh’s Concerto for Dan Bau (the monocord musical instrument) and the orchestra of Vietnamese traditional music instruments, all performed. Also, the Back to Dien Bien symphony by VCA head composer Tran Trong Hung was played on the 2002 festival’s closing night.
The VCA has been collecting their members’ best works to send to the ACL Headquarters in Japan, said VCA Chief composer Tran Trong Hung.
The VCA has launched a number of campaigns to promote this years event among domestic composers since early last year. The organising board has also held workshops to help domestic composers grasp a better understanding of contemporary music as well as the ACL language and style.
Works with a Vietnamese musical influence, however, will have an advantage in the selection process, said the organisers.
Compositions of instrumental pieces in modern styles, such as electronics music and contemporary songs, will make up a large part of the event along side traditional musical compositions, said the ACL.
This year’s event will be hosted by Japan in celebration of the ACL’s 30th founding anniversary while next years event will be held in Israel. — VNS
