ASEAN Secretariat, Jakarta, (7 June) - Forty-four of Southeast Asia’s most inspiring contemporary artworks will be displayed on June 13th to the 27th at the ASEAN Secretariat for a two-week exhibition. The winning entry ‘Constructing Construction #1’ by Singaporean artist Francis Ng Tech Yong will be among the prominent artworks displayed during the show. Together with the Singaporean grand prize winning entry, five other entries which won the Juror’s Choice Awards will also be on display. This include Philippine representative Benjamin Dayrit Elayda III’s ‘Valorized and Commodified Curio,’ Thailand’s Jaruwat Boonwaedlom for his ‘New Vision on Culture,’ Aung Myint of Myanmar for ‘Homage to the Mothers,’ Malaysia’s Mohammad Suhaimi Tohid for ‘Journey’ and Vietnam’s Nguyen Quoc Huy’s ‘Liberation Road.’

Yong’s prize-winning 138cm by 183 cm work used a radical choice of medium – a Hasselblad camera. The composition shows a frontal worm’s – eye view of an unfinished viaduct of Singapore’s Upper Serangoon Road jutting towards the direction of the viewer.

The ASEAN Art Awards exhibit will kick off the Association’s series of public events to mark the organization’s 35th anniversary. The art pieces consisting mostly of paintings and some installation art will be presented at the main lobby of the building all the way through the exhibition hall.

ASEAN Secretary General Rodolfo C. Severino Jr., said that “in recent years, contemporary Southeast Asian art, has matured very rapidly and contributed significantly to the major surge of interest among art lovers from every corner of the world. This year’s winning entries clearly reflect the growing dynamism in the region’s artistic landscape and will no doubt stir the pride of every ASEAN citizen.”

The ASEAN Art Awards in now on its eighth year and is a major project of the Philip Group of Companies. The Group’s support for the arts has grown considerably over the past decade and the ASEAN Art Awards has encouraged emerging local talents.
