Southern artists invest to build an Artists Village

Stieng ethnic minority modelled house of artist Le Trieu Dien.

"There has been a university village, a press village, so why not a village of artists and sculptors? This will be a place where we can create works, exhibit paintings and organise creation camps for artists throughout the country," said artist Nguyen Thanh Chau, secretary general of the Ho Chi Minh City Fine Arts Association, one of the first residents of the village. From the idea, 33 southern artists have invested money to build roads and electricity lines to form the village.
The entrance and the ancient bell in the 100-year-old Hue house of artist Duong Dinh Hung.

Houses have gradually grown up based on a regulated design which excludes western-style. You will find no villa or high-rise building but only traditional village houses of Vietnam. Perhaps nowhere else could architecture be seen with such rich Vietnamese soul as the houses in Ham Long village.

Located at the entrance into the village is the house of artist Nguyen Thanh Chau. His name is very familiar to fine arts lovers but his paintings surprise all visitors. Not very far away from Mr Chau’s house is a house designed on the model of the Stieng ethnic minority where ceramic and terracotta works by artist Le Trieu Dien are displayed.

When visiting the village, one should not forget to call at the 100-year-old Hue house of artist Duong Dinh Hung. This intact house was transported from the ancient capital city of Hue.

A wooden screen, 2.5 metres in width and two metres high, placed in the middle of the Ky Lan Vien (a garden house) of artist Ly Khac Nhu impresses visitors a great deal. The veins of the screen themselves create an imposing painting. Eastern Asia characters are deeply described in water-colour paintings and calligraphies hung on the wall of the Ky Lan Vien. Scattered in the garden are wooden statues skilfully sculptured.

Bach Truong Son.

Splendid and solemn, bearing Hue’s imperial palace, is the house of artist Hoai Huong. The house is a masterpiece with a lake in front. On the lake are flower boats. Sitting on a sofa to enjoy a poem reading on a moonlight night makes you feel like a king.

Artist Bach Truong Son’s house area bears a totally different style. The area includes a stilt house the same as one in the Tay Bac (northwestern part of Vietnam) and a thatched cottage.

Lying near the Saigon River, Ham Long artists’ village is an attractive place of interest. As for the villagers, this is a place that creates inspiration, love and spirit for them to paint and sculpt their works.
