Vietnam's antiques to be displayed in Brussels (August 05, 2003)

Vietnam Antique
For the first time, a large amount of Vietnam’s antiques, including 416 items, will be displayed in the Royal Museum of Art and History in Brussels, Belgium, from September 17, 2003 to February 29, 2004. Mr Dang Van Thang, deputy director of the Ho Chi Minh City Museum talked about the event.

As requested by Belgium, these items should be of historical and cultural significance featuring both the past and the present, so the items to be displayed will depict both the ancient and present times. The Belgian organising board is expecting a Dong Son bronze drum aging from the fifth century AD to the second century BC and sculptures of Kingdom of Champa from the 11th to the 19th century. They will also receive oriental artefacts with statues of Buddha. Some folk paintings, costumes, home appliances, fine arts items handicraft and worshipping objects of ethnic minorities of Vietnam will also be included.

From the recent period, there will be artefacts introducing the Nguyen dynasty and the two wars for national independence in the 20th century.

Apart from artefacts sent from Vietnam’s 13 museums to the exhibition, Belgium is also borrowing other Vietnam original artefacts which are being kept by some European museums. The Royal Museum in Brussels alone, where the show is held, is now keeping as many as 3,000 items in various materials. These will also be displayed during the event.

The Royal Museum of Art and History is located in the pedestrian area of the capital of Brussels. Before, the museum was a palace of a Belgian Emperor. These artefacts on Vietnam will be displayed on a 1,000 square metre area in the museum. After five months, these objects will be shown in the Museum fur Volkerkunde in Vienna, Austria in mid 2004.
