Awards recognise artistic excellence (November 17, 2003)

HCM CITY — The HCM City Arts and Literary Prizes were announced on Thursday at the headquarters of the city People’s Committee with awards presented to a diverse array of artforms.

The prizes were presented to selected entrants sent to the jury board from 2000 to 2002 and are designed to support and recognise excellence in arts and literature.

One prize winner was a traditional dance titled Luc Van Tien and Kieu Nguyet Nga, created by artist Viet Cuong. The dance is based on one of Viet Nam’s most famous romantic and heroic novels written by the great scholar and poet Nguyen Dinh Chieu in the 19th century.

Two other prizes went to architect Tran Dinh Quyen who designed the plan for the Long An Province’s General Hospital and artist Phan Gia Huong for her sculpture work titled Me To Quoc ( Motherland).

Quyen previously won the 2001 National Art Prize for his architectural designs for HCM City’s Thong Nhat Hospital and the Hue General Hospital.

Eleven other awards were presented to other arts and literary works, including one for a culture research and a poem collection.

Mua He Xanh ( Green Summer), a song written by musician Vu Hoang praising the enthusiastic spirit of students in summer activities , is one of the three songs receiving the award.

The feature film Con Ga Trong ( A Cock) made by film director Nguyen Quang Dung from a script by writer Nguyen Quang Sang also won an award for excellence in cinematography.

The HCM City Arts and Literary Prizes are presented every two years and last year the HCM City Peoples’ Committee provided VND3 billion ( US$200,000) in funds to support artistic and literary activities. — VNS
