Vietnamese literature well received in the US (February 09, 2004)

A collection of short stories on Vietnam "Love after War: Contemporary Fiction from Vietnam" has been rated as one of 100 best sellers in the US in 2003 by San Francisco Chronicle newspaper. In its introduction, the paper said Love after War is Vietnam’s biggest contemporary prose collection translated into English.

The collection presents 50 short stories written by well-known Vietnamese writers of various generations, including To Hoai, Nguyen Khai, Nguyen Minh Chau, Ma Van Khang, Le Minh Khue, Trung Trung Dinh, Nguyen Quang Than, Le Van Thao, Nguyen Huy Thiep, Doan Le, Pham Thi Hoai, Tran Thuy Mai, Bao Ninh, Ngo Thi Kim Cuc, Da Ngan, Nguyen Thi Thu Hue, Phan Thi Vang Anh, Phan Trieu Hai and Nguyen Ngoc Tu.

The St. Petersburg Times reported that Vietnam has maintained and developed its literature despite many changes since the war ended in 1975. The Times said the romantic post-war lover stories also reflected the bustling tempo of life in Vietnam.

Earlier, Dumb Luck, a famous Vietnamese novel by the late writer Vu Trong Phung, was selected one of the 50 best works in the US. The novel was published by the University of Michigan Press last June, and it was included in the curricula of US universities.

Recently a collection of folklore stories on the origin of Banh Chung (sticky rice square cake) and Banh Day (sticky rice round cake) was published and introduced in US universities.

Publishers said traditional characteristics and classical examples integrated into contemporary context, or vice versa, have captured American attention to Vietnamese literature.
