Book on Vietnamese women artists published (February 22, 2004)

More than 100 woman sculptors and painters of different generations of the 20th century and their works are introduced in a just published book.

The book by Culture and Information Publisher is in response to the 1000th anniversary of Thang Long – Hanoi.

With 216 pages on the size of 26x36 and 400 coloured printed paintings, the book features the creative achievements of women artists over the past 80 years, from those who were students of the first course of the Indochina Fine Arts College, those in the anti-French colonial period and anti-US war time to those of the present time.

The book aims not only to introduce women artists but also highlights a view on the development and the ups and downs of Vietnamese art through the eyes of women artists. The book features various artists, namely as Le Thi Luu, Nguyen Thi Nhung and Nguyen Thi Kim, who laid the foundation for a Vietnamese art, and Diem Phung Thi, a sculptor of international stature. These artists represent a generation which overcame all restrictions of the feudal society to follow their artistic paths. In the 1970s and 80s, women artists were recognised as having made a great advance in changing their style and looking for a new art language for traditional materials. Some made their names during the period such as Do Thi Ninh, Mai San, Mai Hien and Tran Thi Doanh. The decade of 1990s saw the strong development of women artists. They raised their voices on their works relevance to modern life.

It took almost a year for the book to be completed. The Culture and Information Publishers had to contact with each artist and choose their best works.
