Can Tho authorities plan regional cultural centre (October 04, 2004)

CAN THO ó Can Tho City is planning construction of a massive 90ha cultural centre, which will be the largest in the Cuu Long (Mekong) River Delta region.

The city government will invest a large sum of money from its budget, with financial assistance from other regional provinces and the State Government, to build the South West Cultural Centre, which will be constructed along Can Tho riverís southern bank, said Pham Thanh Van, deputy permanent secretary of Can Tho cityís Party Committee.

"Can Tho is a young city, and our residents donít have high living standards or modern entertainment centres," Van said. "The South West Cultural Centre is part of our effort to improve local peopleís lives. We hope our centre will be one of the regionís key attractions."

The centre will feature an exhibition of ancient artefacts, arts and science displays that will trace Can Tho cityís and the surrounding regionís development.

The centre will also have a massive square capable of holding 5,000 people, as well as conference centres, international exhibitions and much more.

"The centre will provide information for visitors wanting to learn about our historical and cultural events," Van said.

The centreís construction will begin next year and is expected to open in 2010. ó VNS
