Artist Pham Thanh Liem and silk painting (December 27, 2004)

‘Su Bien Ao Cua Lua’ (Magic of Silk) is the name of a painting exhibition of artist Pham Thanh Liem which opens from December 24, 2004 until January 6, 2005 at No 16 Ngo Quyen street, Hanoi. He has been considered the one who made a contribution to making silk for painting.

Born and grew up in Quan Pho, a traditional silk weaving village in Duy Tien district, Ha Nam, Thanh Liem has devoted his whole life to the traditional silk of his homeland.

Thanh Liem made a contribution to improving the weaving technique to make silk suitable for the painting.

In the past, painters used Chinese silk for their paintings as Vietnamese silk was only used for garment. About 20 years ago, Thanh Liem and his aunt Pham Thi Vu were determined to improve the weaving technique to make silk for painting.

Then the new technique in weaving silk for painting has been multiplied in many other households in the villages and other places. However, Quan Pho is now still a main place where painting silk is supplied to most of artists.

Having hundreds of silk paintings during 20 years in the art, all his paintings always have a strange attraction. He liked to take the advantage of the spreading and smearing characteristics of silk. And this makes his paintings full of soft beauty of Vietnam and the Orient.

That beauty is not only depicted in his paintings on landscape and people. Fifty paintings in the ‘Magic of Silk’, the new creations of artist Thanh Liem in the past two years, is the modern beauty in abstract paintings with square lay-out.

The fine arts critic Le Quoc Bao said “50 works of artist Pham Thanh Liem are 50 tones reflecting the magic in aesthetic feeling, lines, colours and styles.”
