1000 years of Hanoi history in largest mural (April 05, 2005)

Hoan Kiem Lake, Hanoi.
At 100m x 3m, a wall painting entitled “The Panorama of Development of Thang Long – Hanoi” will be the largest of its kind in Vietnam.

The Hanoi Department of Culture and Information has assigned management of the project to Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Dung, director of he Hanoi Open University Institute’s Industrial Design Faculty.

After selecting members of the project, Mr Dung initiated work on the mural in August 2001, divided in two parts: architecture of the work and the wall painting.

Project managers organised four workshops to collect opinions of historians, cultural experts and architects about the contents of the wall painting, based on a sketch approved in December 2001.

The first segment of the work will display Vietnamese history from the Au Co and Lac Long Quan legend to King Quang Trung, and the second part covers King Nguyen Gia Long to the present.

The wall painting will be protected by a 100m arched tile roof on pillars and surrounded by a flower garden.

The final sketch of the wall paining has been submitted to the Hanoi People’s Committee for approval.
