In his opening speech, chairman of the Quang Nam Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Xuan Phuc highlighted the significance of the festival for the province and the region, saying it will help spread the regionís traditional cultural images. It is an opportunity for the province to promote its cultural assets such as Hoi An ancient town and My Son Temples, which have been recognised by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) as the World Heritage Sites. It also provides a chance for the province to promote Quang Nam as a province on a fast-track to development.

His speech was followed by a spectacular art performance by some 200 amateur artists, a fashion show displaying a collection of 300 designs, the "Mother Thu Bon" procession, and traditional dances by Cham girls in traditional costumes.

The Quang Nam Heritage Road Festival, held every two years, attracts visitors both from all parts of Vietnam and the world. The event will open a series of activities in the area in response to the Nghe An Tourism Year. The festival will continue until March 27.
