Preservation plan for Sapa’s ancient stones (September 20, 2005)

Lao Cai is devising a preservation project for Sapa’s ancient stone area

Sapa’s ancient stone area, covering 8sq kms, in Muong Hoa valley is one of three historical sites in Vietnam nominated as tangible world cultural heritage. The area comprises 200 blocks of stone carved with mythical images, considered of historical, artistic, cultural and religious significance.

At a cost of VND17.5bil preservation plans will be submitted to the Ministry of Culture and Information for urgent consideration. Due to natural and manmade impact, the relic has gradually degraded and is in urgent need of attention. Assistance has also been sought from France’s Vien Dong Bac Co Institute to photograph and measure each stone in order to record their original state.
