France awards order for Vietnam Opera Theatre’s director (October 31, 2006)

French Ambassador to Vietnam Jean-François Blarel has today awarded the French Order for Art and Letters for Nguyen Cong Nhac, choreographer, dance teacher and director of the Vietnam Opera Theatre.

Nguyen Cong Nhac was honoured for his contribution to the development of the Vietnamese contemporary dance art, which is typical for the co-operative relations between Vietnam and France, bringing the contemporary dance art to the same level with other arts, said ambassador Blarel.

Nguyen Cong Nhac has strongly supported the appearance of the Vietnamese contemporary dance art. Particularly, in the framework of the project “Supporting the development of Vietnamese culture,” he has worked with many French choreographers, including Régine Chopinot and Ea Sola, to stage some ballet operas.

Nguyen Cong Nhac started his career in 1959 when he joined the first course of the Vietnam Dance School. Then, he joined a dance teachers’ training course in Moscow. He spent eight years working as a teacher at the Vietnam Dance School, from 1973 to 1980.

He has worked for the Vietnam Opera Theatre since 1980 and became the director in 1999. He has composed four important dance works.

Many Vietnamese people have received such French order. This year, fashion designer Minh Hanh received the same order and the late well-known film director Le Manh Thich was posthumously awarded the order.
