Salon of art lovers (January 19, 2007)

VietNamNet Bridge – Wishing to paint forever in her home country instead of going on several short painting trips yearly, painter Van Duong Thanh bought a pretty villa near West Lake and called it White Lotus Villa.

The White Lotus with its painting workshops, one day, became a salon where art lovers from all over Vietnam and from other countries gathered to meet and talk about art.

Since then, these meetings have created interest in Vietnamese arts and culture. Many politicians have come here also. No matter who they are and where they come from, visitors come for the same reason: the love of Van Duong Thanh’ paintings and her workshops on silk and lacquer painting.

Visitors include the Spanish ambassadress in Vietnam, Soledad Juentes, who is a painter, and Inma Zamora, director of the Spanish International Cultural Exchange Agency.

A work by Van Duong Thanh
To commemorate the signing of a cultural exchange agreement between Vietnam and Spain on January 15, 2007, the Spanish government selected two lacquer paintings by Van Duong Thanh, O quan chuong and Quan Thanh Temple, to be exhibited at the Spanish National Museum. These two works had also been hung at the Spanish Embassy in Hanoi.

When Ms. Juentes visited a workshop on lacquer painting at the White Lotus, she was delighted and surprised to find that a painting by the brilliant Spanish painter Sorolla was hung there alongside other works voted as the world masterpiece paintings of 1995. One of Van Duong Thanh‘ s works, A child fishing, was among them.

The White Lotus is currently delivering classes in Impressionism and traditional Vietnamese silk painting.

Students come here once or twice a week. They have excellent opportunities to contemplate many works by Van Duong Thanh, from still-life and scenery paintings to portraits.
