Longer version of Dam San epic unveiled (Dec 16, 2002)

The National Institute for Research of Folk Culture has unveiled that they recently discovered a variant of the most famous and voluminous epic of the Central Highlands, Dam San long poem.

The variant of Dam San long poem was recorded by 80-year-old Y Nuh Nie in Krong Pach district for several weeks on 18 cassette tapes. This old man heard this variant when he was just 12 years old.

They are different from other long poems which were discovered by French cultural researchers which were in prose, this variant was mainly written as poetry.

According to Doctor Ngo Duc Thinh, head of the institute, this discovery is rather important, showing a great value of the rare Dam San epic. He said the institute will print and publish both old and new versions of the epic next year with an expected volume of up to thousands of pages.

The Dam San epic poem which has been popular all over the world was collected by a French ambassador named Sabatier in Dak Lak Central Highlands province in the 1920s and published in French for the first time in 1927.
