ASEAN leaders to meet on SARS (April 19, 2003)

Da Nang has recorded comprehensive development and it therefore is worthy to be an economic hub of the country's central region, Prime Minister Phan Van Khai said on April 17.

Speaking to local officials during his visit to the central city, the prime minister praised Da Nang as a bright spot of the country.

Over recent years, Da Nang has consistently posted high economic growth rates, especially in industry, tourism and exports. In the first quarter of this year, the city's industrial production increased 15.8% year-on-year; tourism, up 8%; aquatic and agro-forestry production, up 4.8% and export value, up 12.2%.

The city now has 50 foreign-invested businesses, capitalised at a combined US $303.44 million.

Besides economic achievements, good results have been reported in the city's activities to fight crime and social evils and to restore traffic order and safety.

In the context of complicated changes in the world, having negative impacts on the country, Mr Khai said Da Nang should take preferential policies and measures to promote its internal strength, advertise tourism and attract domestic and foreign capital sources. The municipal Party and authorities should pay more attention to training personnel and technical workers, he further said.

Later the same day, Prime Minister Khai visited the construction site of the trans-national Ho Chi Minh Highway. He stressed that it is a strategic road having great significance for national socio-economic development, so workers should finish construction as scheduled.
