UNESCO pledges to help Hanoi old quarter get World Heritage status (July 07, 2003)

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO)'s office in Vietnam would work closely with Hanoi in a bid to make the city's ancient quarter listed in UNESCO-recognised World Heritage site, said Office Director Chu Shiu Kee.

At a meeting with Hanoi's Vice Mayor Nguyen Quoc Trieu on July 4, Chu said that UNESCO is keen on preserving historical and cultural relics in Vietnam and Hanoi in particular and will give its support for the conservation and restoration of Vietnamese traditional culture, including the city's ancient district.

The vice mayor expressed appreciation for the Office's support, saying that the city would create favourable conditions for works relating to the recognition of the ancient quarter as a World Heritage site. (VNA)
