Viet Nam, Japan kids share old folk games (July 28, 2003)

HA NOI ó The Museum of Ethnology hosts a two-day festival of Vietnamese and Japanese traditional games.

The festival, which openned on Sunday, featured four Japanese folk games including bamboo dragon kite flying, jumping with string, green bean bags throwing and rotating objects; and five Vietnamese games such as cuop co (flag snatching), nhay day (string jumping) and others.

Vietnamese and Japanese children were participating in the event with the help of guides from the two countries.

The museum said the activity was held to help children understand one anotherís cultures by identifying the similarities and differences between them.

Almost 95 children from language schools in Ha Noi were invited to the event as part of the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

The game festival was part of the museumís programme on preserving folk games among children.

The museum believed it was an effective way to help them understand traditional cultural values as they journey back to their ancestorsí childhood.

The event was scheduled to finish on Monday at the Museum of Ethnology, Nguyen Van Huyen Road. ó VNS
