Arts survey asks: what do Hanoians do for fun? (August 22, 2003)

A major ongoing arts survey of Hanoians will allow residents to be more accurately depicted by modern artists, among other benefits, organisers of the research work say.

The Ha Noi Literature and Art Association project, whose results are scheduled for release within a few months, focuses on citizensí tastes in literature and the arts.

Financed by the municipal Department for Science, Technology and Environment, it includes a series of sub-surveys on their ideas, perspectives and hobbies in exhibiting and performing arts. These includes folk literature, theatre, music, sculpture, drawings and paintings, dance, photography and cinematography.

Organisers said the research, which began last year, will give sociologists a leg up in mapping out Hanoiansí cultural interests as they work on projects benefiting the community. This information, which has rarely been gathered in the past, will also serve various agenciesí databases.

Artists can also find the most authentic ways of portraying typical Hanoians through the collected facts and figures, organisers say.

"We are most concerned about the actual facts about Hanoiansí lifestyles, which have been changing at a fast pace generation after generation," said one of the organisers.

"Predictions will also be drawn from the information about the formative trends on the characteristics of future generations."

Historians have raised warnings that rapid urbanisation is causing Ha Noiís populace to veer away from its traditional lifestyles, cultural values, and reputation for elegance and courtesy. ó VNS
