Bronze age antiques unearthed in Ha Tay (September 08, 2003)

Dong Son Drum -- VN
A Dong Son bronze drum.
Antiques found with a famous Dong Son bronze drum uncovered last week in Ha Tay Province, date back between 2,500 and 3,000 years, archaeologists have confirmed.

The artefacts, including bronze arrows, knives and axes were found in Quoc Oai District in the Ha Tay Province at the construction site of a farmer's house.

A member of the Council for assessment of antiques under the Ministry of Culture and Information said the 12cm-diameter drum probably belonged to the "Dong Son" civilisation, aging it between 2,500 and 3,000 years old.

He drew his conclusion based on the drum's decorative detail. Although it is not as richly decorated as others, it may have been used for worshipping purposes.

The artefacts were found in the vicinity of Dong Lu Hill, where two cultural-historical areas have been zoned by the State.
