10,000 antiques found on Cat Ba Island (November 26, 2003)

A great variety of antiques of the ancient Viet people have been discovered on Cat Ba Island, Cat Hai district, Haiphong after a month-long excavation, said archaeologists.

The antiques include 100 stone objects, tens of thousands of ceramic pieces and about 5,000 pieces of stone dating back 5,000 years to the Ha Long Civilisation.

Seventy three archaeological sites have been confirmed on the Cat Ba Island, said head of the Cat Hai districtís culture and information department.

Many objects that were not made on the Cat Ba Island have also been found. This proves that the ancient Viet people had cultural exchanges with other civilisations of the country.

All the finds will be displayed at the Haiphong municipal museum and the Vietnam Archaeological Institute.
