2nd traditional music contest to open in Hanoi (December 18, 2003)

VietNamNet The 2nd contest for solo performances of traditional musical instruments will be organised at the Hanoi Music Institute on December 15-21 by the Performance Art Agency.

Nearly 100 contestants have registered for the contest in four categories, monochord, 16-chord zither, bamboo flute and two-chord fiddle.

Differing from the first contest, the organising board has broadened the range of competitors, including independent competitors, those from art troupes and overseas Vietnamese.

The contest has two stages and two groups, A group for contestants under 16 years old and B group for those aged of 17-35. In each stage, each contestant must perform a piece of their own choice, and two compulsory pieces.

According to Honoured Artist Ngoc Cuong, Head of the Performance Art Agency, the contest aims to seek talented performers of traditional music to preserve traditional music.

There will have one first, two second and two third prizes for A group. For B group, there will be one first, one second and one third prize for each kind of musical instrument.
