VN abstract artist takes to sculpture (March 22, 2004)

Ha Noi-based artist Nguyen Tan Cuong has turned his creative vision toward a new medium.

Cuong is showing his new sculptural works at the Galerie Quynh.

"These works are borne by my love for life," Cuong said. "They feature the natural seasons and festivals like weddings and harvest".

Prosperity and happiness are his show’s themes.

"The works are experiments in sculpture after many years of being involved in painting. I hope it will create an interesting reaction from viewers," he said.

His sculptures, Mua (Dance), Chan Dung (Portrait of a Man) and Nguyen Cau (Prayer), sell for US$2,000 to $4,000 each.

A graduate of the HCM City Fine Arts College in 1973, Cuong has had numerous exhibitions at home and overseas.

Five years ago, Cuong and renowned artist Do Hoang Tuong received a warm reception in California for their collection of paintings named Sai Gon Perspectives.

The exhibition is at 23 Ly Tu Trong Street in District 1, HCM City. — VNS
