HA NOI — Five Vietnamese painters are exhibiting their works at the Alliance Francais to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of the world-famous French writer, Victor Hugo.

The Poem Reading exhibition features the work of painter Phuong Vu Manh and four other young painters, Nguyen Thi Huong Giang, Nguyen Duy Quang, Pham Huy Thong, and Le Xuan Hung Linh, who all chose their favourite Hugo poems as the inspiration for their works.

It is a unique exhibition in the history of Vietnamese art because it is the first time local artists have expressed the poet’s verse in painting – a true crossroads of art and literature.

The exhibition is only one of the events commemorating the artist’s birthday. Five of Hugo’s poems and their Vietnamese translations, and the 10 paintings, have been on display at Alliance Francaise, 42 Yet Kieu Street, Ha Noi, until July 20.
