Little Thuy's Dance
The inscrutable face of a Vietnamese girl half sitting on an antique French chair-some time during the occupation of Indochina during World War Two-what makes me, a man born in the early 1960s in Matlock, a small agricultural town in the county of Derbyshire, northwest England, fall in love with a painting of an eight year old girl sitting in a room in Hanoi’s Hang Cot Street in 1943?

Artist and revolution
By Luong Xuan Doan
The first beautiful pages of Vietnam’s modern fine arts were first written by artists To Ngoc Van, Tran Van Can, Nguyen Phan Chanh and Nguyen Do Cung and later by artists Nguyen Sang, Nguyen Tu Nghiem, Bui Xuan Phai and others, and until today, these are the most beautiful pages of the national revolutionary art.

Vietnamese Modern Painting - Ringing the Bell...

Nudes in Nguyen Phan Chanh's Silk Paintings
After the war with the French ended and I returned to Hanoi, I used to visit Nguyen Phan Chanh at his home at 65 Nguyen Thai Hoc Street, Hanoi. We would discuss his early achievements in silk painting and he would tell me about recent projects and the trips he had taken to gather material for his work.

The Painter Who Discovers Himself in Silk
By C. David Thomas

Clay, fire and skilled hands
A Historical Overview of Vietnamese Ceramics

Phan Cam Thuong is a researcher, art critic and writer of over 12 books in the art and art history fields. He is now a professor at the HaNoi Fine Art University and an acclaimed artist.

The Process of Making Lacquer Paintings in Vietnam
The technique of using lacquer for handicrafts and decorative items in the households has a long tradition in Vietnam since it was introduced from China centuries ago.

Contemporary Artists - Efforts to Build and Affirm a Novel Spirit for the New Artistic Tradition
by Nguyen Xuan Tiep

Vietnamese plastic arts enjoy a time-honored tradition. Their most prominent achievements are the famous wooden statues and engravings in communal houses, pagodas, royal tombs, shrines and temples of Northern Vietnam dating back over millennia. There were also the diverse, multi-faceted arts including the well-known, brightly colored Lang Ho and Hang Trong folk paintings (Ha Bac, Hanoi); the Champa architecture which spread from Quang Tri to Binh Dinh Province and whose ideology, philosophy and religious belief were imbued with reproductive language; as well as a system of funeral houses from Tay Nguyen (Central Highlands) with primitive Aboriginal, mystical and hallucinatory artistic language. These cultural and plastic arts values represent the spiritual foundation and nutrient source that has fostered the creativity of generations of Vietnamese painters.

Bui Xuan Phai - Uncorked Soul

Bui Xuan Phai, the man and the artist, remains a living presence in Vietnam, three years after his death from lung cancer in Hanoi at the age of sixty-seven. The most well known Vietnamese artist outside the country, Phai is the most respected and well-known artist within his own country, despite not being allowed has an individual exhibition until 1984. No one speaks ill of the man: most often he is described as modest, reticent, generous, independent minded, and above all else, a man of quiet dignity.

The Collector’s Confessions
Tran Hau Tuan is one of Vietnam’s leading collector and publisher of several art books.

I was born in Hanoi. A child of a couple of doctors, I grew up in an army hospital living quarter. We led a simple and needy life. All of us children of army men lived in uniformly narrow rooms, listened to the same music broadcast by the Voice of Vietnam, seldom had good books to read and myself never saw an art book.
